On Saturday, January 20, 2018, Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation in partnership with Man-Tra-Con, Rend Lake College, and Southern 14 Local Work Force Investment Board Corporation will host A “Second Chance” for the New Year: Free Legal Assistance Expungement and Record Sealing Clinic.  This clinic will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cairo Jr/Sr High School Cafeteria at 4201 Sycamore Street in Cairo, Illinois.

Expungement is a court-ordered process that allows a legal record of an arrest, court supervision or certain probations to be removed, or expunged, from that person’s criminal record.  Sealing removes eligible criminal convictions from public record and prevents most employers from accessing a person’s criminal record without legal authority.

At the Expungement and Record Sealing Clinic, attorneys will be available to assist eligible low-income individuals with qualifying adult misdemeanor and felony criminal records apply to have their records expunged and/or sealed. This also includes assistance with drafting petitions for the expungement and/ or sealing of their criminal records.

While attendees are not required to bring their criminal records, it may be helpful.  If possible, attendees should come prepared on January 20th with the following information:

  • The case number
  • The date of arrest
  • The arresting law enforcement agency
  • The charges brought
  • Any paperwork they have relating to each case
