On Saturday, January 20, 2018, Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation in partnership with Man-Tra-Con, Rend Lake College, and Southern 14 Local Work Force Investment Board Corporation will host A “Second Chance” for the New Year: Free Legal Assistance Expungement and Record Sealing Clinic.  This clinic will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cairo Jr/Sr High School Cafeteria at 4201 Sycamore Street in Cairo, Illinois. Expungement is a court-ordered process that allows a legal record of an arrest, court supervision or certain probations to be removed, or expunged, from that person’s criminal record.  Sealing removes eligible criminal convictions from public record and prevents most employers from accessing a person’s criminal record without legal authority. At the Expungement and Record Sealing Clinic, attorneys will be available to assist eligible low-income individuals with qualifying adult misdemeanor and felony criminal records apply to have their records expunged and/or sealed. This also includes assistance with drafting petitions for the expungement and/ or sealing of their criminal records. EAST ST. LOUIS, IL (August 1, 2016) – Attorney John E. Thies, a shareholder at Webber & Thies, P.C., in Urbana, and past President of the Illinois State Bar Association was installed as President of Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation on June 22, 2016.  Thies was sworn in by Chief Justice Rita B. Garman of the Illinois Supreme Court. Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation provides eligible low-income and senior residents of central and southern Illinois with high quality civil legal services in order to obtain and maintain their basic human needs. As President, Thies said he wants to empower a staff which, among others, includes more than fifty attorneys to be the best professionals they can be. “Land of Lincoln is one of the premier legal aid organizations in the country – much of that is due to our outstanding staff.”  Thies said.  “With the help of private lawyers throughout the service area, we need to ensure that the legal needs of the poor and aging are met to every extent possible.  I want to energize our profession to be a full partner in the agency’s mission through more institutionalized giving and pro bono service.” Thies served as the 136th President of the Illinois State Bar Association from 2012-2013. He is also past president of the National Caucus of State Bar Associations, and is a member of the Executive Council of the National Conference of Bar Presidents. As a lawyer, Thies has earned a Martindale-Hubbell peer review rating of AV. He also has received the SuperLawyers designation and has been identified by the Leading Lawyers Network as one of the top ten downstate business lawyers in Illinois. Among other organizations, Thies is a member of the Illinois State, Champaign County, Chicago and American Bar Associations. Thies is a Fellow of the Illinois and American Bar Foundations, and currently serves on the Illinois Supreme Court’s Committee on Character and Fitness and the Strategic Planning Committee of the Illinois Judicial Conference. In the area of community service, Thies has served on numerous philanthropic boards and committees. These have included: Cunningham Children’s Home Foundation (past President); Champaign-Urbana Community Schools Foundation (past Chair); Volunteer Center of Champaign County (past Chair); Champaign-Urbana Kiwanis Club (past board member); Illinois Bar Foundation (past board member); and United Way of Champaign County (past board member). Linda Zazove, Deputy Director for Program Operations – Retired, for Land of Lincoln, was presented with the Joseph R. Bartylak Memorial Legal Services Award on June 19, 2015 by the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) at its 139th Annual Meeting held at the Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.   Linda Zazove was recognized for three decades worth of professional and dedicated work focusing on low-income and senior populations in Central and Southern Illinois. She has worked tirelessly for equal access to justice in an extraordinary variety of ways at the local, state and national level. Linda began her career with Land of Lincoln in 1980 representing clients in domestic violence and Social Security cases. During her tenure with Land of Lincoln, Linda filed or co-counseled nine successful class actions. Linda served as Director of Development before being promoted to Deputy Director of Program Operations. Linda has served on numerous committees and boards during her legal aid career. Even though Linda has retired from Land of Lincoln as Deputy Director of Program Operations, Linda will continue to serve working on updating technology for Land of Lincoln through the end of 2015.   Land of Lincoln’s Director of Litigation and Advocacy, Susan M. Simone, and Managing Attorney of the Eastern Regional Office, Susan Zielke, jointly nominated Linda for this award. “Throughout more than 30 years in legal services, Linda has used her exceptional advocacy and administrative skills to tirelessly advance the interests of the poor and disabled. Joan Spiegel, Managing Attorney of the Western Regional Office for Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation (Land of Lincoln), was presented with The Lawyers Trust Fund of Illinois’ Leadership Award on June 12 from at its annual meeting held at the Chicago Bar Association.   Joan Spiegel was recognized for more than three decades worth of exemplary leadership and dedicated service to the cause of equal access to justice. During her 31 years of service at Land of Lincoln, Joan’s main focus has been on the rights of children, victims of domestic violence, and individuals with disabilities. With a special talent for collaboration, Joan worked closely with domestic violence shelters and courts to create The Lawyers in the Courtroom Project in 1997, and had an instrumental part in the establishment of the Third Circuit’s mortgage foreclosure mediation program. In 2011, Joan spearheaded a program in the Third Judicial Circuit that created a circuit-wide pro bono coordinating council that brought together a variety of stakeholders (including judges) to address the need for more pro bono services.
